Which is Best: Wood Decking or Composite Decking?
The answer to this question will depend on factors like your budget, the deck design , size of your space, and maintenance requirements.

Natural Wood Decks
- A natural wood deck made of Treated Yellow Pine is a durable and low-cost option, treated with non-toxic chemicals to prevent decay, rot, and insect attacks.
- Treated Yellow Pine decking colors may fade over time and should not be painted.
- A natural wood deck made of Western Red Cedar is beautiful, durable, and naturally resistant to decay, rot, and insects. It’s a long-lasting and low-maintenance option.

Composite Decking
- Composite decking offers superior durability, aesthetics, and requires little maintenance compared to natural wood. It has mildew and fire-resistant properties in addition to being splinter free.
- Composite deck boards are available in a wide range of wood grain patterns, so you still get that same natural wood look.
What Type of Wood is Best for Decking?
Some of the best wood species for outdoor decks include the following.

Pressure-Treated Southern Yellow Pine
Pressure-treated Southern yellow pine is the most common decking material used in Oklahoma, and it is easy to see why. It is:
- Affordable
- Durable
- Resistant to weather, bugs, and rot
- Milled in Oklahoma

Cedar
Western red cedar makes for a great-looking deck that is durable and resistant to rot. A highly respected and coveted material, Western red cedar decks are also more expensive than those made of other types of lumber, since this wood needs to be imported from British Columbia.

Tropical Hardwoods
Tropical hardwoods are the most expensive decking option, but they are popular for a reason. Take Ipe (Brazilian walnut), for example. This exotic wood has a gorgeous look, is long-lasting, durable, and requires less maintenance than many other wood species.
At Hughes Lumber, we can special order Ipe and other woods for your decking needs.
Should I Use Deck Screws or Fasteners for My Decking Project?
It is very important to use the right screws or fasteners. Which one is best for your jobsite or home depends on factors like appearance and budget.
Deck screws are well-designed to handle the elements of outdoor living. They are resistant to rust and corrosion and are easy to screw in as well. They also come in different colors to match any deck and are typically cheaper than the hidden fastener alternatives.
Hidden fasteners tie deck boards to a support structure by anchoring on the side or underside of each board, leaving the surface of the deck fastener-free. Hidden fasteners are both aesthetically pleasing and safer than other options, making them great for locations with lots of foot traffic.
