Fiberglass Insulation
Reliable Thermal Performance for a More Comfortable Home
Fiberglass insulation is the most widely used insulation material in residential construction, offering an affordable and effective way to improve a home’s thermal performance. Made by spinning molten sand and recycled glass into fine fibers, fiberglass creates millions of small air pockets that slow heat transfer through walls, ceilings, and other parts of the home.
Available in several forms for different applications, fiberglass insulation can help keep homes warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer while reducing the amount of energy needed for heating and cooling.
Benefits of Fiberglass Insulation
Fiberglass has remained a go-to insulation material for builders and homeowners because it combines dependable performance, affordability, and versatility.
- Energy efficiency: Fiberglass traps air within its dense, fibrous structure, slowing conductive heat transfer and helping maintain comfortable indoor temperatures. Proper insulation can significantly reduce heating and cooling demands.
- Affordable performance: Fiberglass provides effective insulation at a relatively low material cost, making it a practical option for insulating an entire home.
- Naturally non-combustible: Because fiberglass is made primarily from glass and sand, the fibers themselves are naturally non-combustible.
- Sound reduction: The dense network of fibers naturally absorbs sound waves, helping reduce noise transmission between rooms and through walls and ceilings.
- Long-lasting thermal performance: When fiberglass insulation is kept dry and properly protected, it can maintain its insulating performance without significant degradation over time.
- Made with recycled materials: Fiberglass insulation is commonly manufactured with recycled glass, making efficient use of materials that might otherwise become waste.
- Allows moisture vapor to pass: Fiberglass itself is vapor-permeable, allowing moisture vapor to move through rather than being trapped within the insulation material.
Fiberglass Insulation Options
Different parts of a home call for different insulation products. Fiberglass is available in several forms, giving builders flexibility when insulating new construction or completing an insulation upgrade.
Batts and Rolls
Pre-cut fiberglass batts are designed to fit common framing dimensions, making them a popular option for walls, floors, ceilings, and other open framing cavities. Rolls provide similar performance with additional flexibility for covering longer areas.
Loose-Fill Fiberglass
Loose-fill, or blown-in, fiberglass consists of small fibers that are blown into the desired area using specialized equipment. It can fill irregular spaces and is commonly used in attics where a deep, continuous layer of insulation is needed.
Rigid Fiberglass Boards
Rigid fiberglass boards provide insulation in a dense panel format. Depending on the specific product, they can be used in applications where greater rigidity or specialized thermal and acoustic performance is required.
Understanding Fiberglass Insulation R-Value
R-value measures a material’s resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater its insulating ability.
Fiberglass insulation typically provides approximately R-3.0 to R-3.8 per inch, although performance varies depending on the particular product, density, thickness, and installation.
For example, a standard 3.5-inch fiberglass batt designed for 2×4 wall framing commonly provides around R-13. Fiberglass batts designed for 2×6 framing may provide R-19 or R-21, depending on their thickness and construction.
Loose-fill fiberglass can be installed to achieve a much wider range of total R-values. Depending on the depth of the insulation and requirements of the project, blown-in applications can reach approximately R-30 to R-60 or higher.
Choosing the appropriate R-value depends on where the insulation is being installed, the construction of the home, and the project’s thermal performance requirements.
Fiberglass Insulation for Every Project
From wall cavities and floors to ceilings and attics, fiberglass insulation offers options for a wide variety of residential building applications. Batts, rolls, loose-fill insulation, and rigid boards allow builders to choose the right combination of installation method and thermal performance for each part of the home.
