Rising to the highest monthly pace since early 2008, new single-family home sales recorded strong gains in April, according to estimates from the Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Increasing 16.6% on a monthly basis and 23.8% year-over-year, the pace of new home sales came in at 619,000 on an annualized basis. Sales increased for all regions except the Midwest. The April rate of sales was significantly higher than recent trends, as noted on the graph below.

Findings from the latest NAHB study on housing preferences, Housing Preferences of the Boomer Generation: How They Compare to Other Home Buyers, shows there are some similarities and differences in what home buyers of different generations want in terms of square footage and number of bedrooms in a new home. When asked how much finished space they would like to have, home buyers in general reported wanting a median of 2,020 square feet, about 9% more space than they currently have (1,859 sq. ft. Age plays a key role in desired home size, however) Buyers in the Millennial and Gen X generations both want homes over 2,300 square feet, whereas Boomers and Seniors would like homes under 1,900 square feet.

Industry benchmarks on profit margins, asset levels, and equity positions are important because they allow businesses to compare their performance to their peers, and that can be extremely helpful in identifying areas for improvement and increasing efficiencies. Over time, weatherstripping can become worn out and damaged which then creates drafts. Insulation can settle over time, thus reducing its R-value and becoming less effective.
